Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days.
As kids we would have given up sweets (not that we got loads as they were treats!)
Now whether you are religious, spiritual or not at all bothered the timing of Lent coincides with the beginning of Spring when our ancestors would have most likely ran out of food. If you are a gardener this time is known as the 'hungry gap' when there is very little growing. It is a great time to kick start our get fitter and leaner after the winter months campaign. I've spoken before about January being the wrong time of the year to change our way if eating and start exercising. But a ritual like Lent can be the kick start we need. So after eating all the pancakes today pick some small change and commit to 40 days of forming this habit. Tell someone close to you if it will make you accountable. Or if you don't want to give up something then take up something. Have a healthier breakfast and after a few days you will probably not want to undo the good work and the rest of your daily food choices will become healthier. Start walking for 20-30 mins, do a 7 min workout every day, meditate for 10 mins (I try a gratitude meditation every morning and it's a brilliant way to start your day), go to bed 30 mins earlier, turn off the screens earlier, read, write……..the options are countless! Then when Easter Sunday comes around eat a big Easter egg 😜 life is for living, none of us are getting out of here alive, #80:20
